---------------------------------------------Did You Know?---------------------------------------------------

The adoption of the poinsettia as the Christmas flower dates from the 1800s. Native to Mexico, the plant has small yellow flowers surrounded by large red leaves, often mistaken for petals. In 1828, Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett, the
first US Ambassador to Mexico, brought the plant to the States, where it was renamed in his honor.

The custom of the Christmas tree is believed to have begun in Germany in the 700s. By the 16th century, fir trees were decorated to commemorate the holiday. The decorations at the time included paper roses, apples, wafers
and sugar. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther first added lighted candles, inspired by stars twinkling through the evergreens at night. The claim of the Pennsylvania Germans to have initiated the custom in America is
undisputed.
